Meet the Instructors

Cheryl Ash is the owner and head trainer at Hillside Equestrian Center.  With over 30 years of experience in the industry and an education at Meredith Manor, Cheryl’s passion with horses has created an environment where students can learn and enjoy their equine friends at the same time.  With a high standard of excellence, she promotes good horsemanship in all aspects of equine care and riding.  Her USDF Bronze medal and graduation with distinction from the USDF “L” judging program are proof of her experience and knowledge.  As she teaches and judges throughout the area, Cheryl currently is striving to take her fourth level horse “Valkyrie” to the FEI levels.

Natasha Rutherford started working for Cheryl in 2009, and since then she has been a huge asset to the farm!  Natasha graduated from and taught at Delaware Valley College, where she also was the assistant coach for their dressage team.  In addition to being the farm’s barn manager, Natasha uses her ten years of teaching experience to introduce new blood to the sport.  Using basic dressage principles to help the rider gain a balanced seat, Natasha will teach any discipline or age.  Some of her students are riding independently at just four years old! When she’s not teaching, Natasha can be seen campaigning her sale project pony “Lucy” in the eventing world.

Jessica Stemmler is the newest instructor in the barn, though she is no stranger to Hillside!  Jessica started riding with Cheryl as a teenager when she was just getting into horses.  Now, after several summers as a working student and four years at the University of Findlay, Jessica is a trainer as well.  Using the dressage basis she had instilled in her from the start, she has expanded her abilities to include western and even sidesaddle.  The merging of the best techniques of each discipline has left Jessica with a unique approach to riding that is a mix of traditional dressage, western discipline, and natural horsemanship techniques.  Jessica’s latest endeavor is into the breeding world, where she hopes to get a foal from her mare Karona.
